The first is Spider-Man.

[Spider-Men? Plural? ]

What about Spider-Man?

[A deep breath; it almost feels like she's betraying Spider-Man, by ratting him out. The guilt complex she's developing runs deep. ]

He - [she almost says he knows who I am. A conversation for another day, maybe. ] He's been following me. He seems to think I need saving.

[ There's a pause. A long one. ]

Following you how closely, Rose? Saving from what?

From you.

[A short pause; she swallows. ] I believe the words he used to describe you were 'narcissistic sociopath.' As much as I would like to believe he's gotten the message to leave the Green Goblin alone, his persistence suggests he's biding his time.

Do you know who he is under that mask?

[Is this the time to also bring up the other goblin?? Probably not. She grinds her teeth. Sorry, Spider-Man, she thinks. ]

I'm not a sociopath.

[ Not that the distinction is relevant. Norman's jaw clenches, teeth grinding mildly as he listens -- on the one hand, he's smug to have gotten Spider-Man's attention already, gotten under his skin. On the other hand, he is irate at the meddling. That's not how the game goes.

Rose's question does nothing for Norman's temper. ]

He's persistent, which only means you must be more so. Whatever he tries, stay a step ahead -- it shouldn't be too hard.

[That doesn't really bode well, she thinks. But also he doth protest too much.]

That part isn't important, Rose.

What do you plan to do about this?

[A long pause. ]

Do you want him suitably distracted from yourself?

That should be obvious. We've worked too hard for him to interrupt now.

Mmm.

I want to know who he is and evading him hasn't worked thus far.

And what difference will knowing who he is make?

Leverage over him. I'll take care of him, regardless.

Leave his identity for me to worry about. Unless you manage to coerce him out of his mask.

Besides yourself, you mean? [ With mild amusement, before he pauses and then adds: ] What makes you think I have anything to do with this "Hobgoblin?"

Someone in a goblin mask tells me that they were sent to tell me I need to check in, the natural assumption is to you.

What would be the purpose?

I couldn't possibly be so arrogant as to assume to know why you would do anything.

But if I had to guess, it would be reassurance of some kind.

The mere fact of this phone call is an assumption, I'd say.

And even if you were right, it would defeat the purpose for me to say so, don't you think?
